Overfishing and Illegal Possession of Excess Catch

Description: It is unlawful for any individual to be in possession of more than 20 fish above the legal personal limit, as defined by local wildlife and fishing regulations.

Legal Limit: Individuals are permitted to possess up to 20 fish for personal use. Possession exceeding this amount is considered overfishing.

Charges:

  • Misdemeanor: Possession of 21–60 fish above the legal limit

    • Fine: $500

    • Jail Time: Up to 15 months

  • Felony: Possession of over 60 fish above the legal limit

    • Fine: $1,000

    • Jail Time: Up to 30 months

Additional Notes:

  • All fish in excess of the legal limit are subject to immediate seizure and disposal by Wildlife Officers or Law Enforcement.

  • Repeat offenders may face license suspension or permanent fishing bans.

  • This law applies to both fresh and saltwater fishing, regardless of bait or location.
